The ATHENA Committee Announces Six ATHENA Awards Scholarships for 2010

For the twentieth anniversary of the Nashville ATHENA Award Program, the ATHENA committee will provide $21,000 in scholarships for a total of six awards in four categories. All Scholarships will be awarded during the ATHENA Award ceremony on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, Nashville, Tennessee.

Category I: Traditional Category- There are two scholarships available for female high school seniors graduating from public or private high schools located in Davidson and contiguous counties in the amount of up to $5,000 for first place and up to $2,500 for second place. The winning award is underwritten by ATHENA Alumni Society and the second place is underwritten by First Tennessee Bank.

There will be four Non-Traditional Scholarships from Categories II - IV.

Category II: This Non –Traditional scholarship which was first given in 2001, will provide two scholarships in the amounts of $5,000 and $2,500 presented to women who have chosen to pursue an associate or bachelors degree later in life. The winning award is underwritten by Emdeon. The second award is underwritten by Women in Commercial Real Estate (WCRE).

Category III: Non-Traditional Women in Technology of Tennessee (WiTT) provides a $3,000 scholarship to a woman currently in the workforce who has chosen to pursue a degree in science, technology, engineering or research field.

Category IV: Beginnibg in 2008, Saint Thomas Health Services (STHS) has provided a $3,000 scholarship to a woman currently in the workforce who has chosen to pursue a degree in a healthcare related field.

PLEASE NOTE that an applicant may apply to Category II (non-traditional) and either Category III or IV as appropriate. Each application is reviewed separately and duplicate information must be submitted if applying for more than one scholarship.

The question for the essay is based on the ATHENA story: "What is the greatest gift you have to give and to whom would you give it?"

HOW TO APPLY
Step 1: Sign up on this website.
Step 2: Select a scholarship and fill out the required form.
Step 3: Upload required supplemental documents thru this web site.
Step 4: Get qualified persons to upload letters of recomendation on your behalf (upload area found on awards page).
Step 5: Once you have all files uploaded and all information is complete, SUBMIT the application. This process allows you to fill out parts of the application as time permits so that you can return again and again until your information is complete.

ATHENA AWARDS FOR TRADITIONAL STUDENTS

PURPOSE:  

To provide two scholarships to support the first year of college for two female 2010 high school graduating seniors who live in or attend high schools located in Davidson and contiguous counties.

THE AWARD:

Two scholarships will be given. The first place award will be up to $5,000 and the second place award will be up to $2,500.  The winning award is underwritten by the ATHENA Alumni Society and second place is underwritten by First Tennessee Bank.

Winners will be notified by Friday, January 22, 2010, and also posted on the website, www.NashvilleATHENAAwards.org . Scholarship recipients will be introduced on stage and awards presented at the ATHENA Award Program on Thursday, March 25, 2010, at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be a 2010 female graduating senior at an approved public or private high school located in Davidson and contiguous counties.
  • Have a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale and be in the top 25% of the graduating class.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

The application and copies of all of the documents listed below must be submitted electronically by the December 18, 2009 before the application will be considered complete. Please upload ONLY .jpg, .doc, or .pdf

  1. An essay of 300 words or less addressing the following topic:
    What is the greatest gift you have to give and to whom would you give it?
  2. Two letters of reference, one from a person familiar with the student's potential to be successful in a program of higher education and one from a teacher. Each letter should focus on academic potential, leadership abilities, need, and worthiness of student (See guidelines for letters of recommendation.)
  3. A copy of official high school transcript
  4. A copy of the most recent ACT or SAT scores
  5. A copy of parent/guardian’s 2008 Form 1040 Income Tax Return as documentation of financial need.
  6. A copy of a letter from the college or school verifying completion of application materials or admission for Fall, 2010.

THE AWARD:

Two scholarships will be awarded to non-traditional students. The $5,000 first place winning award is underwritten by Emdeon and the $2,500 second place scholarship is underwritten by Women in Commercial Real Estate (WCRE).

  • Have been out of high school five years or longer.

  • Document financial need and verify enrollment or completion of admission process.

One $3,000 scholarship will be awarded to non-traditional student, who lives in or attends school in Davidson County or a contiguous county with a focus on science and technology. 

The winner will be notified by Friday, January 22, 2010, and also posted on the website,, www.NashvilleATHENAAwards.org.  The scholarship recipient will be introduced on stage and awards presented at the ATHENA Award program on Thursday, March 25, 2010, at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be a graduate of any high school or have earned a GED.
  • Have been out of high school five years or longer.
  • Be enrolled for an associate's or bachelor's degree focusing on science, engineering, research or technology fields.
  • Be able to document financial need.
  • Currently in the workforce.

This scholarship is intended to enable the recipient to continue to pursue a career in a healthcare-related field.

THE AWARD:
One $3000 scholarship will be awarded to non-traditional student, who lives in Davidson or a contiguous county in Tennessee with a focus on healthcare. 

The winner will be notified by Friday, January 22, 2010, and also posted on the website,, www.NashvilleATHENAAwards.org.  The scholarship recipient will be introduced on stage and awards presented at the ATHENA Award program on Thursday, March 25, 2010, at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be a graduate of any high school or have earned a GED.
  • Have been out of high school five years or longer.
  • Be enrolled for an associate's or bachelor's degree focusing on a healthcare-related field.
  • Commit to working for Baptist Hospital, Hickman Community Hospital, Middle Tennessee Medical Center or Saint Thomas Hospital for at least one year upon graduation.
  • Be able to document financial need.
  • Currently working in the workforce.
